The Echo of a Missing Page

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The library smelled of dust and lemon oil. Mara ran her finger along the spine of the red leather volume — Burton's Anatomy, third edition, 1652 — and felt the slight give where a page had been sliced clean from the binding. Not torn. Slicen. A scalpel's work.

She had found the gap three days ago, between partitions 4473 and 4475. The numbering jumped. The text leapt from "Amabile objectum amoris" to "Forma est vitalis fulgor" without the bridge between. Four lines of Latin, gone. The bookseller had shrugged. "Common in these old things. Worms. Fire. Someone wanting a specific passage."

But the cut was too clean for worms. Too precise for fire.

Mara pressed her palm flat against the facing page. The paper was cold. She closed her eyes and listened — not with ears, but with the part of her that remembered every book she had ever read, every marginal note, every coffee stain. The missing page hummed. A low vibration at the edge of hearing, like a tuning fork struck in another room.

Omnia appetunt bonum, the text before the gap read. All things desire the good.

Forma est vitalis fulgor, the text after began. Form is a vital radiance flowing from the good itself.

What lay between? What truth about desire and form had someone decided the world must not read?

The hum grew louder. The leather cover warmed under her hand. Ink bled from the cut edges — fresh ink, black and smelling of iron gall — spelling words that had not been there a moment ago.

Nemo scit quid perdiderit nisi qui legerit quod deest.

No one knows what they have lost except the one who reads what is missing.

The library lights flickered. Somewhere in the stacks, another book fell open. Then another. The echo was spreading.
