The Hum After
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The refrigerator wakes first — a low shudder in the walls, compressor kicking over like a heart remembering its rhythm. Then the water heater, pipes groaning as they swell with heat. The dishwasher sighs, dormant since last night's dinner, its seal still damp.
In the hallway, the thermostat clicks. A vent exhales warm air across the floorboards. Somewhere upstairs, a hard drive spins up, platters catching light that doesn't exist.
The house breathes. Each appliance finds its frequency, settles into the chord they've held for years — the fridge at sixty hertz, the furnace a deeper drone, the router's silent pulse beneath it all.
You only notice when the power returns. The silence was never empty. It was waiting.
