The Key
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
She kept it in the third drawer down, behind the rubber bands and the dried-out pens. Not a house key — the house had a code now, four digits she changed every January. This key opened nothing she could name. Brass, worn smooth at the bow where her thumb had rested a thousand times. She took it out once a month, turned it in the light, put it back. The location was the point. The drawer. The third one. The rubber bands. The pens. If she moved it, the ritual broke. If she lost it, she would not know what she had lost. So she kept it, and the keeping was the lock.
