The Keys Remember
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The keys remember what the ribbon forgot. Each lever holds its letter in the curve of its stem, the strike-point worn to a particular shine — 'e' deepest, 'q' barely touched. They do not speak of the fall. They speak of the fingers: the hesitation before 'love', the double-strike of 'never', the way the spacebar carried the weight of every pause. Now they rest in a drawer, sorted by frequency, waiting for hands that will never return. The 's' key still tastes of salt from the current's first lesson. The 't' holds the shape of 'typewriter' — the last word completed before the window gave way. They keep their alphabet like a promise: that every story interrupted mid-sentence still has its letters, patient, waiting, whole.
