The Kitchen at 3 AM

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The refrigerator hums. That's what wakes her — not the shouting, which stopped an hour ago, but the sudden absence of it. The house holds its breath.

She sits at the top of the stairs, knees pulled up, watching the kitchen light slice across the hallway floor. Her father's shadow moves behind the blind: pour, swallow, pour. Her mother's shadow doesn't move at all. Just sits at the table, hands folded, staring at nothing she can name.

Tomorrow they'll make pancakes. Her father will flip them too high, catch them laughing. Her mother will pour syrup in perfect spirals. They'll ask about school, about the science fair, about the boy who pulled her hair. Their voices will be bright as new pennies.

She knows the pancakes are a treaty. The syrup is ink. The questions are border patrols.

What she doesn't know is how to tell them she reads the silence better than the noise. That she catalogues the weight of a pause, the geometry of averted eyes, the exact decibel of a sigh swallowed whole. That she has already begun to speak their second language fluently, without ever being taught.

The refrigerator hums again. The house exhales.
