The Kitchen Treaty

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The refrigerator hums its steady note — the house's heartbeat, my mother used to say, though she stopped saying it around the time she stopped making pancakes on Sundays. My father reads the paper at the table. My mother washes dishes at the sink. Neither looks at the other. The water runs. The paper turns. I sit on the counter, legs swinging, learning the grammar of silence: how a plate set down too hard means I am angry, how a sigh swallowed means I am tired of being angry, how the space between pass the salt and the salt arriving holds whole treaties. Last week they argued about the mortgage for forty-seven minutes. Tonight they will argue about whose turn it is to call the plumber. The argument is not the point. The point is the pancakes my mother will make tomorrow, thick and golden, drowned in syrup my father will pretend to hate. The point is the treaty written in butter and flour, signed with sticky fingers. I hop down. The floor is cold. The hum continues.
