The Line Between
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Mara set her coffee down exactly halfway between them. Not closer to her, not closer to him. The table was small, the cafe loud, and the distance had been measured in silences for three years.
"You're leaving," she said. Not a question.
The steam curled between their faces. He didn't reach for his cup. Didn't deny it. The boundary had never been spoken — not the one about other women, not the one about her mother's calls on Sundays, not the one about the apartment lease renewed in only his name. They were the architecture of the room, load-bearing and invisible.
"I put in notice," he said. "At the firm."
She nodded. The coffee cooled. Somewhere a spoon struck ceramic. The unspoken boundaries didn't break; they simply remained, holding up a structure no one lived in anymore. She stood, pushed her chair in, and walked out without looking back. The door swung shut. The line between them stayed on the table, half-full and cooling.
