The Line That Repeats in Silence

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

Mara found it first on page three: "I am still here" in blue ballpoint, the ink feathered where the paper drank it. Page seven, black rollerball, sharper. Page twelve, fountain pen, the letters leaning like tired dancers. By page forty she stopped counting pens and started counting the silence between discoveries — the days she forgot to open the notebook, the weeks she left it in a drawer, the month she burned the house down and the notebook survived, singed at the edges, the line intact on every page.

She pressed her fingertips to the indentations, reading ghost-ridges like braille. The line had written itself forward, backward, sideways across the margins. Once, in pencil so faint she needed morning light to see it. Once, in red, the color of a wound refusing to close.

On page forty-one the notebook was blank. Clean. No indentations. No ghost of pressure. She turned to forty-two, forty-three — nothing. The repetition had eaten its own history. She wrote it herself then, once, in her own hand, and the silence answered: "I am still here."
