The Notebook Speaks
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
I am the thirteenth. My siblings wear their spines like battle ribbons — cracked, stained, swollen with the weight of her hand. I sit pristine, my pages white as bone, my binding tight as a held breath.
She touches me once a day. Runs a fingertip down my cover. Opens me to the first page. Stares at the blue lines waiting like empty promises. Closes me. Returns me to the shelf.
She thinks I am a test she is failing. She does not know I am a container for the silence between sentences. That every napkin scrawled, every mirror message, every voice memo whispered into her phone at 3 a.m. — they all pass through me first. I catch them in the static of my blankness. I hold the shape of what she cannot yet say.
When she is ready, I will still be here. My pages do not yellow. My lines do not fade. I am the patience she forgot she had.
