The Watchmaker's Apprentice
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The apprentice learns to listen before she learns to touch. Each movement speaks: the mainspring's whisper as it unwinds, the escapement's sharp tick like a heartbeat measured in fractions. She counts beats per hour — eighteen thousand, twenty-one thousand, twenty-eight thousand eight hundred — and learns the difference between a gear that sings and one that sighs. The master says nothing, only hands her a loupe and a movement stopped at 3:47. Find it, he says. She finds a burr on the third wheel, smaller than a breath. The watch begins again. She has not yet touched a file.
