Undercurrent

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The river moves two ways at once. On top, the current reads like a sentence — clear direction, visible purpose, the kind of flow you can point to and name. But underneath, a different water runs: cold, slow, dragging silt and secrets downstream without announcement.

Mara learned to read the surface by watching what it refused to show. A smooth patch meant a stone beneath. A sudden ripple meant the deep water pushing up. The river never lied, but it omitted constantly.

She dropped a weighted line at the bend where the willows leaned. Forty feet down, the temperature dropped eight degrees. The current there moved at half the speed, westward instead of south, carrying things the surface had forgotten — a wedding ring from 1987, a child's tin soldier, the jawbone of something that never got named.

The hidden current doesn't care about the surface's story. It has its own geography, its own destinations. But the surface cannot exist without it. Every visible eddy is a signature of the dark water pressing up.

Mara pulled the line. Nothing on the hook but mud. She cast again anyway, because the river had taught her: what you're fishing for is rarely what you catch.
