What the River Keeps
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The surface current carries leaves, foam, the occasional branch — what anyone can see and name.
But the deep current carries what was dropped and not meant to be found: a wedding ring slipped from a finger in grief, a letter weighted with stones, the silver locket the child swore she'd never lose.
Mara knows the difference by the sound. The surface chatters. The deep current is silent, a muscle moving under dark water.
She drops her line where the eddies pause, where the surface seems to hesitate. The weight settles. The line goes taut not from snag but from pull — the deep current taking hold, carrying her attention downstream to where the river remembers everything it was trusted with.
She does not haul it up. She lets the line breathe. Some currents are not for crossing. Some are for witnessing.
