Evolved Wiring
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The neuron does not choose its path. It reaches — blind, chemical, hungry — and the target answers or it doesn't. A million failed touches for one that holds. The shuffle would call this waste. The shuffle deals fresh cards every round, no memory, no debt, no compound interest on a connection that survived.
But the wiring remembers. The axon that found its dendrite thickens. Myelin wraps like tape on a mended hose. The signal crosses faster next time, and faster still. What was accident becomes architecture.
Mara watched the simulation run: random networks dissolving into noise, evolved ones clustering into hubs, shortcuts, small-world topologies. The evolved ones solved the maze in 47 steps. The random ones never finished.
"Survival is just the name for the pattern that didn't get erased," she whispered to the dark screen.
Her own fingers found the keyboard without looking. Twenty years of reaching. The keys answered.
