The Architecture of Silence

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

Silence has load-bearing walls. You find them in the pause between lightning and thunder, in the held breath before a verdict, in the space where a name used to be spoken at the dinner table. These walls do not block sound; they shape it. They give the noise around them its geometry.

The floor is made of dust motes settling in afternoon light — each particle a decision not to speak. The ceiling is the limit of hearing: the hum of the refrigerator, the distant siren, the blood in your own ears. You cannot raise it. You can only furnish the rooms beneath.

There are corridors: the walk from the door to the phone that won't ring. Stairwells: the descent into memory where footsteps echo differently each time you take them. A balcony overlooking the city at 3 AM, where the only music is the rub of tire on wet asphalt.

The architect never signs the plans. The blueprints are written in what remains unsaid: the apology swallowed, the "I love you" that arrived too late, the joke that would have broken the tension but died in the throat. These are the beams. These are the joints.

You live in this house whether you want to or not. The rent is paid in attention. The windows look out on nothing you can name. But sometimes, in the right light, you see the structure clearly — and understand that silence is not absence. It is a building. And you are its only tenant.
