The Gap Between Spikes
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The electrode sees what the network cannot: a neuron firing at 196.3 Hz, perfectly regular, each spike identical to the last. No synaptic noise. No dendritic integration. Just the membrane's own rhythm, the sodium-potassium pump keeping time like a metronome in an empty room.
The network sees nothing. Its democracy requires at least ten voices, a quorum of coincidence. One vote is noise. One vote is rounding error. One vote is the dark between stars.
But in the gap between spikes — the 5.1 milliseconds of silence — the neuron rests. It does not wonder if it is heard. It does not count. It only waits for the next threshold, the next inevitable rise, the next perfect, solitary action potential that will go nowhere, mean nothing, and happen again.
