The Hallway Remembers
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The hallway does not forget. Each footfall presses into the plaster, a signature the walls learn by heart. Morning brings the quick, light tap of bare feet — hesitant, then confident, the rhythm of someone learning the length of their own stride. Evening drags heavier soles, the slow percussion of return. The house holds both in its grain.
At 3:17 AM, a single step echoes from the bedroom to the kitchen and back. No one else hears it. The hallway drinks the sound, stores it in the cool space between floorboards, releases it days later when a stranger walks the same path and shivers without knowing why.
Resonance is not in the foot. It is in the waiting wood that answers.
