The Loudest Sound
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
She expected thunder. The door slam, the voice raised, the plate thrown against the wall — something to answer the pressure building behind her ribs for weeks.
Instead: the kettle clicking off. His mug placed on the coaster with a soft ceramic kiss. The fridge opening, closing. Water running. A spoon stirring tea — clink, clink, clink — against the ceramic, a metronome of ordinary.
She had rehearsed the explosion. Knew exactly where she would stand, what she would say, how the words would land like blows.
But he only drank his tea. Wiped the counter. Went upstairs. The bedroom door shut with a sound smaller than a sigh.
She stood in the kitchen, fists unclenching, realizing the war was over. Not won. Not lost. Simply ended in the space between heartbeats, in the steam rising from a mug she hadn't made, in the silence that settled like dust on everything they would never say.
