The Middle Third
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The proof sat on the blackboard for three weeks. Every morning she found the same gap — not an error, exactly, but a space where the logic thinned until it vanished, a Cantor dust of missing steps. She tried bridging it with lemmas, with counterexamples, with the heavy machinery of measure theory. Each attempt left a smaller gap, then a smaller one, a fractal of almost-proofs.
On the twenty-third morning she stopped trying to cross it. She drew a circle around the void and wrote: Here the argument breathes. The gap was not in the mathematics. It was in her insistence that every truth must be walked to, step by step. Some destinations are only reached by learning to jump.
