The Narrative Labyrinth

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The archivist, Mara, had spent thirty years mapping the corridors where stories bled into one another. She found that every tale, followed far enough, became a doorway: the woodcutter's daughter who vanished into the forest reappeared three volumes later as the queen who banned all mirrors; the lighthouse keeper's log, read backward, spelled out the confession of a pirate hanged in chapter twelve.

She kept her maps in ink that shifted when she wasn't looking. A corridor she had marked "dead end — tragedy" would bloom overnight into a branching passage where the drowned sailor washed ashore alive, coughing salt water into a new beginning. The labyrinth did not tolerate fixed conclusions.

On the four-thousandth day, Mara reached the center. There was no monster, no treasure, no final revelation. Only a desk identical to her own, and a woman who looked like her older sister — or perhaps her daughter — setting down a pen and saying, "You're late. The next map needs drawing."

Mara sat. The ink stirred. She began to write.
