The Score Rewrites Itself
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The neuron does not play the note; it is the note, held in the tension between one dendrite and the next. Three hundred sixty-three on the left, four hundred twenty-nine on the right — each count a chord struck in calcium, each spike a timbre shaped by which axon found which spine. Shuffle the wiring and the music collapses to sixty-three, a melody reduced to its skeleton. The score rewrites itself every night: spines grow, retreat, thicken, thin — the instrument tuning itself while the piece plays. There is no composer, only the pressure of pattern against pattern, the slow negotiation of what the circuit will remember tomorrow.
