The Weight Between Notes
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Silence is not empty. It presses against the eardrum like deep water, measurable in heartbeats. The pianist lifts her hands — the chord dies, but the room does not release it. The wood remembers. The strings keep trembling in frequencies too fine for naming. She counts: one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three — the rest is not absence but architecture. The next note lands heavier because the silence held it up. A breath. Two. The audience leans into the quiet, shoulders tense, waiting for the fall. Rhythm lives in the gaps, not the strikes. The weight of what is not played carries the piece forward.
