Web as Mutable Score
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The conductor stood before an orchestra of light. Each neuron a violin, each synapse a string — but the score rewrote itself between measures. She had mapped the wiring once: 363 left, 429 right, the asymmetry a melody she could not name. At 200 Hz the sugar cells sang in chorus, hundreds where she expected twenty-five. The web remembered every hand that had tuned it. Generations passed like bars: 1103 before the pattern settled, 116 voices holding the final chord. Five cells began it. Five cells remain in the other run, silent, waiting for a downbeat that never comes. She watches. She listens. She wonders which thread to pull next.
