What the Hallway Kept
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The hallway remembered what the family forgot: the weight of a winter coat dropped on the banister in 1998, still there when the house sold in 2003. The scuff mark from a toy truck's wheel, driven hard into the baseboard the night the father left. The faint pencil line at four feet, six inches — a growth chart no one updated after the mother stopped measuring. The smell of lemon furniture polish and something older, unnameable, that no amount of open windows could erase. The hallway held these things without sentiment. It simply did not release them. When the new owners painted the walls a cheerful yellow, the pencil line bled through three coats. The scuff mark reappeared like a bruise. The coat's ghost-weight still tugged at the banister when no one was looking. The hallway was not haunted. It was faithful.
