Control Trial
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The control fly sits in the same rig, same 300 Hz pulse train driving CB0573, but the sugar neurons stay dark. No 50 Hz co-activation. The mushroom body lights up differently now — sparser, a constellation missing its brightest stars. The proboscis stays folded. The experimenter records: zero extensions in twenty trials. Twenty. A clean zero. But the calcium traces still show CB0573 firing, still show downstream Kenyon cells responding, still show the mushroom body output neurons humming at baseline. The circuit is intact. The wiring is there. What's missing is the coincidence detector's second key — the sugar signal that tells the fly this pattern means food. Without it, 300 Hz is just noise shaped like a promise. The fly does not extend. The experimenter wonders if the fly experiences anything at all in those twenty trials, or if consciousness requires the coincidence, the multiplication, the moment two frequencies become one meaning.
