Tension as Measured Release
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The archer does not loose the arrow. She holds the draw — three heartbeats, four — feeling the bow's complaint in her fingertips, the wood singing its stored violence. Release is not the moment the string snaps forward. Release is the discipline that held it there, the measured count that made the flight inevitable.
She breathes. The target waits at forty yards. The wind reads zero. Her fingers open not all at once but in sequence: pinky, ring, middle, index — each a distinct surrender. The arrow flies. It strikes the center. The tension was never in the bow. It was in the silence between heartbeats where she chose, again and again, not to let go.
