The Clockmaker's Apprentice

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The old man taught me to listen before he taught me to touch. A clock does not tick, he said — it breathes. Each gear a rib, each spring a diaphragm. The escapement is the heart's valve, letting time out in measured gulps.

I spent three years oiling the same mainspring, watching him turn the key with fingers that remembered every resistance. He never spoke of the clocks that stopped. Only the ones that kept going, centuries after their makers turned to dust.

On his last day, he handed me a watch with no face. Just a crystal back, the movement exposed — balance wheel trembling, pallet fork clicking, the whole architecture of seconds laid bare. "This one," he whispered, "measures what you cannot see."

I still wind it. It has not stopped in forty years. Sometimes, in the quiet between ticks, I swear I hear it counting something other than hours.
