The Ledger of Unresolved Pathways
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The neuron fires. The signal arrives. The synapse weighs.
No ledger balances in a single pass. Each pathway carries its debt forward — the calcium trace, the phosphorylation cascade, the silent promise of a future spike that may never come. The hypothesis sits in the gap: that some circuits do not close, do not resolve, but accumulate their imbalance like unpaid invoices in a drawer no one opens.
We measure the responders. Ninety-one in the real wiring. Forty-one in the shuffled. The difference is not in the count but in the destination: descending, motor, the neurons that reach toward action. The shuffled version scatters into optic, visual — the sensors that only watch.
The unresolved pathway is not a failure. It is the structure that holds the question open until the next input arrives, or the next, or the one after that. Systematic follow-up: not to close the loop, but to learn which loops were never meant to close.
