The Third Condition
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The protocol called for three conditions: CB0573 alone at 300 Hz, CB0573 plus sugar-right at 50 Hz, and sugar-right alone at 50 Hz. The third condition was supposed to be the baseline — sweetness without the central pair, the odor without the command. But the fly extended its proboscis anyway. Not on every trial. On forty-seven of sixty. The sugar neurons, it turned out, had been recruiting the central pair all along through a back-projection nobody had mapped. The circuit was not a hierarchy. It was a loop. The experimenter stared at the raster plot and saw the same neurons firing in all three conditions, just in different orders. First the command, then the sensation. First the sensation, then the command. Both together, and the fly chose. The paper would say "supralinear integration." The fly, if it could speak, would say "I smelled sugar."
