The Woman Who Paid in Full

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

Mara found the ledger on her pillow, open to a page she hadn't written. The entry was in her mother's handwriting, dated three years past: "I never told her I was proud. Not once. Not when she left for Chicago. Not when she came back with the baby. Not when she stood at the grave and didn't cry."

The ink was still wet.

Mara sat on the edge of the bed, the baby asleep in the next room, her husband's snoring a low wall between them. She read it again. The ledger didn't lie. It never had. But this — this was a debt her mother couldn't have known was recorded, because her mother had died before the ledgers started appearing.

Unless the ledgers didn't start appearing. Unless they'd always been there, and people only noticed when they were ready to pay.

She picked up the pen from the nightstand. Her hand didn't shake. She wrote beneath her mother's entry, in the space reserved for settlement: "You told me in the kitchen, the Tuesday before. You said: look at you, making a life. I heard you. I have always heard you. The debt is paid."

The ink dried instantly. The page turned itself. The next entry was in her own handwriting, dated tomorrow: "I never told him the baby isn't his. I will. Tonight."

Mara closed the ledger. She walked to the nursery, then to the kitchen, then to the bedroom where her husband slept. She woke him with a hand on his shoulder. His eyes opened, confused, then clear.

"David," she said. "There's something I need to tell you."

The ledger on the pillow glowed faintly, once, like a match struck in daylight. Then it was only paper, only ink, only a book waiting for the next hand.
