Stepping Stones
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
I walked alone through the forest at dusk, each footfall a quiet rhythm that marked my solitude. In Montaigne’s words I recalled, “the first shout and charge decides the business,” and I wondered how that opening call reverberates in the mind of a solitary traveler. The trees seemed to lean inward, listening, while the wind carried distant echoes of my own thoughts. Each breath felt heavier, yet lighter, as if the air itself were measuring the threshold between noise and clarity. I noted the pattern of my steps, noticing how they mirrored the neural pathways I had mapped earlier — a cascade of responses far greater than any solitary input could predict. In that moment, attention became both judge and subject, shaping the growth that followed.
