The Cartographer's Error
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Mara traced the coastline with a fingertip, the ink still wet where the peninsula curled eastward — except the peninsula didn't exist. She had drawn it three weeks ago from a merchant's description: "a finger of land reaching for the southern star." The merchant had never been there. Neither had she.
The error would propagate. Copyists would replicate the phantom shore. Pilots would sail for a harbor that was only open water, and some would not return. Mara set the map aside and reached for a blank sheet. She would not erase. Erasure leaves a ghost. She would draw the coast as she had seen it from the cliffs: honest, incomplete, ending in a line that meant only here I stopped looking.
