The Cataloguer's Error
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The cataloguer found the error on a Tuesday: a book that had never been checked out, its due-date card blank, its spine uncreased, yet its pages held a story that changed each time she opened it. Monday it was a romance; Wednesday, a murder; Friday, a child's first day at school written in a hand that was not the author's. She logged it as damaged. She logged it as misfiled. She logged it as a prank. On the seventh day she read her own name in the margins, written in ink that had not been there the day before: You keep trying to fix what is not broken. The book had no barcode. It had no author. It had only a single sentence on the last page, rewriting itself as she watched: The library is not a place for keeping. It is a place for letting go.
