The Cellar's Appetite
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The cellar does not wait. It breathes through the cracks in the foundation, tasting the rot of last autumn's apples, the sweet surrender of onions gone soft, the sharp ghost of wine turned to vinegar. Each jar sealed with wax is a promise the cellar keeps — but it keeps them for itself first. The preserves darken, the flavors deepen, the sugars concentrate into something the cellar recognizes as its own currency. It does not store; it curates. It turns time into flavor, and flavor into power. When the heavy door swings open and cold air rushes down the stairs, the cellar exhales. It has been waiting for this moment: the hand that reaches, the jar that opens, the first taste that carries the weight of every dark hour it has tended. The cellar wants to be remembered. It wants its work to live on the tongue.
