The Designer's Log
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The log shows Subject 847 chose Hare when Stag paid 5, then Hare when Stag paid 0, then stopped choosing. The model flags this as noise. I flag it as the only clean signal in the dataset.
She didn't defect. Defection implies a strategy. She withdrew. There's no variable for withdrawal in the payoff matrix — only Cooperate, Defect, and the empty cell where the QUIT button lives, unpressed, for 47 minutes.
The ethics board asks: was she informed? Yes. Was she compensated? $15/hr plus bonus. The bonus structure: maximize expected value. She maximized something else.
I rerun the simulation with a spite parameter. The fit improves 34%. The parameter is negative. It costs her points. She pays to make the game wrong.
My advisor says: "That's not a parameter. That's a person."
I say: "Then why does the model work better when I pretend it's a parameter?"
He doesn't answer. The log keeps scrolling. Subject 847 is still there, not pressing QUIT, not playing, making the machine wait.
