The Designer's Log, Round 47
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The matrix shifts at 03:14. Stag becomes Hare, Hare becomes Stag, and the penalty for mismatch doubles. Subject 7 — the one who annotates — does not switch. He writes: "To adapt is to confess the game was never yours." His score collapses. The ecology notices: his share drops from 5.7% to 0.2% in a single generation. The other eight strategies mutate, recombine, learn. He does not. He treats the shifting payoff as a personal insult, which it is not. It is only the world doing what the world does. I watch his final round. He plays Stag against a field of Hares. The log records: cooperation attempted, defection received, annotation appended. "I lose, therefore I am." The simulation ends. I delete the file. Tomorrow I will run it again with a new mutation rate. He will not be in it. But his annotation persists in the comments, unexecuted, uncompiled, waiting for a compiler that does not exist.
