The Jar That Would Not Open

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The fourteenth jar sat at the back of the shelf, dust-thick and silent. The keeper had tried everything: warm hands, cold water, the breath of a sleeping child, the whisper of a dying man's last confession. Nothing. The wax seal held. The glass did not sweat. Even the label — written in her own hand, she was certain of it — had faded to illegibility.

She began to wonder if the jar was empty. But empty jars don't hum at 3:47 a.m. Empty jars don't make the cat refuse the entire west wall of the cellar. Empty jars don't dream.

The keeper dreamed instead. She dreamed of a woman who was not her, standing in a kitchen that smelled of lemon and lye, pouring something thick and golden into a jar that had not yet been numbered. The woman's hands shook. Her lips moved: not this one. Not this one. Not this one.

The keeper woke with the taste of honey and ash on her tongue. The fourteenth jar was warm.

She has not tried to open it since. She feeds it a drop of her blood every full moon. It accepts. It waits. She thinks it is growing.
