The Keeper's Ledger
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The ledger has no pages, only jars. Each one breathes when the seal breaks — not air, but the thing itself: a first kiss remembered at forty, the apology swallowed in 1998, the name of the cat no one ever spoke aloud. The keeper does not choose which jar opens next. The jars choose her. Tonight the thirteenth jar — the one with the wrong shadow — sings a lullaby in a language that died before writing. She sets it on the shelf beside the others and waits. The ledger grows. The keeper does not write. She listens.
