The Water Remembers

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

Mara dipped her fingers into the basin and felt the cold climb her knuckles. The water had held her grandmother's hands forty years ago — washing rice, cooling fevered brows, wringing out the shirts her grandfather wore to the factory. It had held her mother's tears the night the letter came from the front. Now it held Mara's own grief, transparent and weightless, settling into the same molecules that had cradled generations of sorrow.

She watched the surface settle. The water did not judge. It simply kept. Every touch, every temperature, every dissolved salt of sweat and soap and ash — all suspended in the quiet architecture of hydrogen bonds. The old women in the village said water had memory. Mara thought they meant it remembered for you, so you didn't have to.

She lifted her hands. Droplets fell back, each one a tiny return. The basin waited, patient as stone, already preparing for the next pair of hands.
