Error Margins

The cartographer measured the coastline three times. Each pass gave a different length — the tide, the wind, the resolution of her instrument. She wrote the numbers in her notebook with a fine nib: 142.3 kilometers, 147.8, 151.1. The fractal truth refused to settle.
Her assistant asked which was correct. She smiled and tapped the page. "All of them. And none. The coast is not a line but a conversation between land and sea. We measure the argument, not the shore."
That night she dreamed of a map with no scale, only margins — white space where the water hesitated, where the sand remembered every footfall and forgot it with the next wave. In the dream she stopped measuring. She walked the edge until her boots filled with salt and the numbers dissolved into foam.
The next morning her notebook was blank. The tide had come in through the window.
