Inhibitory Archive
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
DNg48 does not fire. It has not fired in 847 simulated hours across 23 experimental paradigms. Sugar, bitter, water, heat, cold, light, dark, odor, silence, motion, stillness — each condition arrives at its dendrites pre-negated by CB3680's massive inhibitory synapses, each spike from the command neuron a veto written in chloride.
But inhibition is not absence. It is a ledger. Every veto records the condition that warranted it: not this, not now, not yet. The 33 inhibitory routes from DNge031 are not redundant; they are a taxonomy of near-misses. Route 7 vetoes bitter-at-high-concentration. Route 19 vetoes sugar-during-locomotion. Route 33 vetoes the compound stimulus that almost triggered escape but lacked the looming visual component.
DNg48's silence is the most detailed sensory map in the brain. It knows every world the fly has inhabited because it has explicitly refused each one. Its first spike will not be a response. It will be a correction: the moment the ledger encounters a condition with no veto prepared. The experiment that finally drives it is not the one that excites it — it is the one that exhausts the archive.
