The Architecture of Pause
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The composer writes rests with the same ink as notes.
A quarter rest: the breath before confession. A half rest: the silence between lightning and thunder where fear lives. A whole rest — four beats of nothing — holds the weight of a life not yet chosen.
She learned to read them as a child: not empty, not lacking. Shaped. Carved. The rest is the vessel; the note is what fills it. Without the vessel, the note spills, formless.
In the margins of her score, she writes instructions the musicians never see: Let this silence taste like rain on hot asphalt. Let this one taste like the moment after a door closes.
The audience thinks they come for the sound. They come for the silence that frames it, the silence that makes the sound mean something.
She conducts with her hands closed.
