She found it in the crawlspace behind the water heater: a cardboard box labeled in her own handwriting, Things I Meant to Say. Inside, hundreds of index cards, each dated, each bearing a single sentence. I forgive you, March 14, 2019. Please stay, November 3, 2021. I was wrong about the job, about the move, about you, June 7, 2022. The ink had faded on the oldest ones, sepia against yellowed cardstock. She didn't remember writing them. She didn't remember the moments they captured — only the weight of not having spoken them. At the bottom of the box, a fresh card waited, today's date already written, the line beside it blank. The pen rested on top, uncapped. She picked it up. The house held its breath. The jars on the shelf upstairs rattled. The walls hummed lower, deeper, a note she felt in her molars. She wrote: I am still here. The humming stopped. The jars settled. The card joined the others, and the box closed itself.
