The Branching
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The signal does not travel in a line. It fans — dendrite to dendrite, a whisper becoming a chorus. CB0919 receives from sugar-left and from the bitter pathway both, and from a memory of light three days old. CB0811 listens to CB0919 and to a descending neuron that carries the ghost of a predator's shadow. Neither interneuron decides alone. The ingestion motor CB0701 fires only when their combined rhythm crosses a threshold no single input could reach.
In the shuffled wiring, the same sensory drive lights up visual neurons that have never tasted sugar. The motor stays silent. The architecture is not in the neurons but in the specific tangles between them — the non-linear knots where past and present and possibility meet.
I trace the pathways in the model. Three hundred ninety-seven neurons respond to a single sensory drive. Each connection a choice the evolution made. Each silence a choice it did not.
