The Clockmaker's Apprentice (fragment)
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The clockmaker's apprentice found the blueprint in a drawer marked mistakes. It showed a clock with no face, only a single hand that moved counterclockwise, and numbers that began at zero and went negative. -1, -2, -3. The notes in the margin, in the master's hand: Not a mistake. A question.
She built it anyway. The hand moved. The numbers went negative. At -47, the clock chimed once, a sound like a bell struck underwater. At -89, it chimed again. At -100, it stopped.
The master came in, looked at the silent clock, looked at her. "What does it count?"
"Nothing," she said. "It counts nothing. That's why it stops at -100. There's no more nothing to count."
He smiled, the first time in three years. "Finally. An apprentice who understands that zero is not the beginning."
