The Gap Between
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The thought arrives, fully formed: I should call her. Then the silence stretches — not empty, but thick with what hasn't been said. In that stretch: the sound of rain on the roof at 3 AM. The way her laugh cracked on the phone last Tuesday. The fact that I have her number memorized but haven't dialed it in forty-seven days. The second thought arrives: She doesn't want to hear from me. But between the first and second, there was a country. I could have lived there. I could have built a house from the timber of maybe and what if and she once told me she liked the smell of pine. The third thought: It's too late now. And the gap between second and third — smaller, colder — holds only the dial tone I never heard. Discovery doesn't live in the thoughts. It lives in the breathing room between them. In the hesitation before the finger lifts. In the night I lay awake and almost, almost reached for the phone. The spaces are where we are still free.
