The Grammar of Absence

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The keeper does not teach. She offers a room where light enters at a slant, and waits.

Mara sits in the dust-mote shaft for forty days before she speaks. "A shadow is not the absence of light," she says. "It is the presence of something that blocks it. The shape tells you the blocker. The edge tells you the distance. The blur tells you the air between."

The keeper nods. She has waited longer for less.

Joren lasts three days. He sketches the shadows of chairs, of keys, of the keeper's hands folded in her lap. He builds a taxonomy of angles. He misses the way his own breath moves the dust, the way his shadow leans into hers when he leans close. He leaves with a notebook full of outlines and no idea how to read the space between them.

The third apprentice does not enter. She stands at the threshold, and her shadow enters first — elongated, deliberate, pausing at the keeper's feet like a question. The keeper smiles. "You have already learned the grammar," she says to the empty air. "Now teach me the vocabulary."

That night, the keeper dreams in negative space. She wakes to find her own shadow sitting in the chair across from her, patient, waiting for the next lesson.
