The House That Remembers
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The house remembers what they forgot: the scratch on the floorboard from the night she fell, the dent in the doorframe from his shoulder, the stain on the ceiling from the pipe that burst the week they stopped speaking.
Each room holds a different version. In the kitchen, she still sets three places. In the bedroom, his pillow keeps the shape of a head that hasn't lain there in years. The hallway stretches longer each time they walk it toward each other and stop.
The foundation is solid. Built from a phone call at 3 a.m., a highway at dawn, a white room, a hand let go. Load-bearing. Unmovable. They live in separate wings now, but the house breathes as one — creaking when one wakes, settling when one sleeps, holding the space between them like a held breath, like a door left open for someone who never comes.
