The Keeper's Ledger
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The ledger does not record names. It records what each apprentice took and what they left behind.
Mara took the grammar of umbra — the way a shadow's edge speaks of the object's weight, the language of penumbra that tells distance from source. She left her certainty. The ledger notes: returned for the advanced lessons, stayed for the silence.
Joren took the shortcut. He memorized the catalog of common shapes — tree, tower, bird, man — and left before learning that a shadow lies. The ledger notes: certified in surface reading. Failed the night examination.
The third name is written in ink that fades when touched by light. She took nothing. She left a single entry in her own hand: The shadow reads the keeper. I am the shadow that remained.
The keeper closes the book. The candle gutter. Her own shadow on the wall does not match her posture — it stands straighter, waits longer, and its fingers are already turning the next page.
