The Lingering Hum
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The hum lived in the space between sentences — not silence, exactly, but the vibration of a string after the bow lifts. She had left the luthier's workshop unfinished on page forty-seven, the varnish still wet on his fingers, and for three weeks the character waited in the margin of her attention, patient as dust.
Tonight she wrote: He set the violin down and walked into the rain without his coat. The hum did not stop. It changed key, that's all — from the tension of omission to the quieter resonance of consequence. The luthier's wet shoulders. The varnish curing on wood that would outlive them both. The next sentence already forming in the dark.
