The Lingering Hum
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The hum does not announce itself. It arrives like dust on a windowsill — already there when you notice, a low vibration beneath the silence of the room. Some call it tinnitus, others the sound of blood in the ears, but she knows it as the frequency of things left unfinished.
A letter half-written. A promise to call. The book set down at page forty-seven, the protagonist standing at a crossroads she will never reach. Each incomplete thing adds its note to the chord.
She has learned to work with it. The hum guides her fingers to the keyboard, to the garden, to the pot of tea steeping too long. It is not anxiety, not exactly. More like a compass needle trembling toward north — proof that something in her still orients, still wants.
Tonight she writes the ending she owed the protagonist. The hum does not stop, but it changes key. A resolution, not a silence.
